XRP Ledger upgrade xrpld 3.3.0 Five Amendments Explained

-

The upcoming XRP Ledger upgrade, xrpld 3.3.0, is set for release next week. This update introduces five significant amendments aiming to enhance the functionality and privacy of the ledger. These amendments include Confidential MPT, Batch, Permission Delegation, Sponsored Fees and Reserves, and Dynamic MPT. Each amendment requires at least 80% approval from trusted validators over two consecutive weeks to become active, ensuring broad consensus within the community. The upgrade seeks to address security issues while introducing advanced features for improved transaction handling.

The Batch amendment in xrpld 3.3.0 permits grouping up to eight transactions across different accounts into a single atomic operation so that either all transactions succeed or none are applied. The amendment enables ledger processing to treat the grouped transactions as one indivisible unit, ensuring atomicity across multiple accounts. Batch is listed among the five amendments included in the xrpld 3.3.0 release. The mechanism applies grouped transactions together during validation and ledger application.

Security researcher Pranamya Keshkamat and the firm Cantina identified a flaw in the Batch amendment’s signature validation that could allow an attacker to execute transactions from any account without possessing the required cryptographic keys. Following the discovery, validators were advised to reject the Batch amendment. An emergency server release then marked the amendment as unsupported. No funds were lost because the vulnerability never reached the main network.

The xrpld 3.3.0 release includes three new amendments: Confidential MPT, Sponsored Fees and Reserves, and Dynamic MPT. Confidential MPT combines zero-knowledge proofs with elliptic-curve encryption to keep balances and transfer amounts private while allowing auditors or regulators to verify transactions when required. The amendment applies cryptographic methods to conceal account balances and transfer amounts while retaining selective verifiability for auditors or regulators. Confidential MPT is one of the amendments included in the xrpld 3.3.0 release.

Sponsored Fees and Reserves allows a bank or platform to pay another account’s XRP transaction fees and reserve requirement. Dynamic MPT lets an issuer specify at creation which token properties can be changed later. Both Sponsored Fees and Reserves and Dynamic MPT are listed among the amendments carried by xrpld 3.3.0. Amendments on the XRP Ledger require at least 80% of trusted validators to back them for two consecutive weeks before taking effect.

The xrpld 3.3.0 release carries five amendments—Confidential MPT, Batch, Permission Delegation, Sponsored Fees and Reserves, and Dynamic MPT—bringing coordinated protocol changes to the XRP Ledger.

These amendments collectively provide privacy enhancements through Confidential MPT, options for external fee and reserve payment via Sponsored Fees and Reserves, and configurable token property flexibility via Dynamic MPT, with Batch and Permission Delegation addressing atomic transaction grouping and delegated fee arrangements respectively.
