Agent Wallet Enables AI-Powered On-Chain Trading

MetaMask launched Agent Wallet, a self-custodial AI wallet that enables autonomous on-chain crypto trading within user-defined boundaries, allowing AI agents to execute transactions while operating inside rules set by the user. MetaMask rolled Agent Wallet out to about 200 early access users in June. The product includes controls such as spending limits, protocol approvals, configurable risk settings, and toggleable Guard Mode and Beast Mode.

Agent Wallet supports integration with several AI agent frameworks, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenClaw, Hermes, and OpenCode. The wallet also supports Hyperliquid and Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible networks. The wallet implements gas abstraction to simplify fee handling across supported chains. These integrations enable agents built on the listed frameworks to operate on the supported networks.

Agent Wallet’s gas abstraction feature allows network fees to be paid with the asset being transferred rather than requiring the chain’s native token. MetaMask presents this capability with the phrase, “Never worry about paying for gas.” The company also states, “Agents can transfer and swap without holding a chain’s native token for gas; MetaMask settles the network fee in the token being moved.” The gas abstraction mechanism removes the need for agents to maintain native-token balances for fee payment.

Agent Wallet includes security features such as transaction simulation, threat scanning, and MEV protection to evaluate and mitigate risky operations before execution. The wallet applies wallet-level permission enforcement to limit what AI agents can do, a mechanism described as reducing risk. These security checks operate at the wallet level to enforce permissions and detect threats. The design places multiple technical safeguards between agent actions and on-chain execution.

Agent Wallet also provides Transaction Protection that covers up to $10,000 per month for eligible transactions that pass its security checks but result in losses. The coverage is described as applying monthly and limited to eligible transactions meeting the wallet’s security criteria. These protections are part of the wallet’s stated safety controls and eligibility requirements are applied before coverage.

“The agent can act, but it acts inside the user’s boundaries.” “This security-first model is why Agent Wallet is built around rules, not blind delegation.”

The article notes competitors to MetaMask’s Agent Wallet, including Coinbase’s Agentic Wallets, which launched in February. It also references MoonPay’s AI agent strategy announced in March and a separate initiative called MoonAgents operating on Telegram in July. These initiatives are presented as contemporaneous projects in the emerging AI-enabled crypto wallet ecosystem without additional commentary on comparative features. The article discloses that MetaMask is a product of Consensys.
