Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) Milestones: GPT-4, OpenClaw, ElizaOS

-

Shaw Walters, founder of Eliza Labs, claims that current leading artificial intelligence models meet his definition of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Eliza Labs was launched in 2024, originally as ai16z, and has since developed ElizaOS, a framework for autonomous AI agents. The release of GPT-4 in 2023 contributed to more reliable AI performance, while OpenClaw experienced significant growth with about 147,000 stars on GitHub. Moreover, Coinbase’s introduction of ‘Agentic Wallets’ on its Base platform demonstrates significant advancements in AI applications within the industry.

Eliza Labs, initially launched in 2024 as ai16z, focuses on developing innovative AI solutions. The company is recognized for creating ElizaOS, an open-source framework designed to facilitate the development of autonomous AI agents tailored for blockchain applications. Shaw Walters, the founder, highlights various challenges in AI development, particularly the task of making AI agents provide structured responses and perform action calling effectively. This challenge was notably addressed with the launch of GPT-4 in 2023, which enhanced the reliability of AI interactions.

Walters emphasizes a key insight into AI, noting that while current AI models learn differently from humans, they still possess general intelligence. He suggests that rather than evolving as a single dominant system, AGI will exist in various forms, catering to diverse needs and applications. Walters’ acknowledgment of these distinctions and developments underlines the potential and complexity of AI systems.

Recent developments in the AI agent ecosystem have seen a shift from mere experimental chatbots to sophisticated, persistent systems embedded within both crypto and consumer platforms. A significant example of this expansion is OpenClaw, which has gained remarkable attention on GitHub, accumulating around 147,000 stars. OpenClaw’s success has led to the creation of related projects such as Moltbook. In the realm of cryptocurrency, Coinbase has launched ‘Agentic Wallets’ on its Base platform, enhancing AI applications in financial services. Additionally, Fetch.ai has showcased the capability of its agents to conduct purchases using the Visa infrastructure, further demonstrating the growing integration of AI in everyday financial transactions. These advancements reflect the increasing complexity and utility of AI agents across various sectors.

Shaw Walters rejects the idea that AGI will emerge as a single dominant system, saying “There’s never going to be one, because life loves variants.”

He said, “I think that we’re at the inflection point where we have AGI.”

Walters added, “I completely believe that this is general intelligence. It’s nothing like us. It learns in a completely different way, but it is intelligent nonetheless, and it is very general.”

He warned that as AI advances toward AGI, it behaves less like a predictable machine and more like a fallible human, “making foolproof safeguards impossible to engineer.”
