Reddit will end RSS feeds on November 13. New requests for public API access will end on October 31, and public access to Reddit’s API is scheduled to close in March 2027. Apps and users that have not registered or that do not answer Reddit’s outreach will begin losing access on January 12, 2027; the company has set a staggered timeline from the end of new requests through partial and then complete shutdown.
Apps and users must register or respond to Reddit’s outreach to maintain API access during the transition. Failure to register or to answer outreach will trigger phased loss of access as outlined by the company. Moderators retain special access to Old Reddit and to alert mechanisms despite the wider shutdown. Moderators who previously relied on RSS alerts are noted as having alternative alerting options available.
Reddit began charging developers for API access in 2023. In early 2024 the company signed a roughly $60 million-a-year licensing agreement with Google to train AI models on Reddit posts. A separate deal with OpenAI followed in May 2024. These actions occurred across 2023 and 2024.
Reddit filed a lawsuit against Anthropic in June 2025. In October 2025 the company brought actions targeting Perplexity and three data‑scraping firms, including SerpApi. Perplexity and SerpApi pushed back against those actions. Those actions took place in mid and late 2025.
The platform’s stated focus includes reducing automated abuse and scraping. The events described span API monetization measures and legal actions between 2023 and October 2025.
Reddit will end RSS feeds on November 13 and close public API access in March 2027 as measures to curb AI scraping and automated abuse. These changes align with the platform’s API monetization and licensing actions and represent a shift toward greater platform control and data monetization, while moderators retain some continued access to Old Reddit and to alert mechanisms.
