Coinbase has announced the integration of 50x leveraged crypto perpetual futures on its Base App through a partnership with Hyperliquid. This strategic move provides users access to more than 290 perpetual futures markets, including popular cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. The launch caters to the growing demand for leveraged trading options, allowing users to amplify their positions significantly while trading on the platform.
Perpetual futures, commonly known as perps, are a type of derivative contract that does not have an expiration date. This feature allows traders to hold their positions indefinitely, unlike traditional futures contracts, which require settlement at a future date. Perpetual futures can be liquidated if the trader’s losses exceed predetermined thresholds, thus managing risk in highly leveraged trades.
Base App users can access over 290 perpetual futures markets via Hyperliquid, with offerings that include leading cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as tokenized stocks and commodities. This extensive range of markets enables diverse trading opportunities for users. Notably, perpetual futures are significant in the cryptocurrency trading landscape, accounting for approximately 75% of the trading volumes, indicating their popularity and demand among traders seeking flexible and potentially high-reward positions.
Base previously rebranded its wallet as Base App and positioned it as an ‘everything app.’ In July, Jesse Pollak stepped back from leading the app. Base’s strategy shifted to focus on trading, payments, and AI agents. These changes were part of a broader repositioning of the product.
The integration with Hyperliquid adds 50x leveraged perpetual futures to Base App. Hyperliquid handles execution and trades occur inside Base App. Users can access more than 290 perpetual futures markets through the integration, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as tokenized stocks and commodities. The launch was described as bringing advanced trading tools to users while preserving self-custody.
Power users say leverage is the single most requested feature. Perpetual futures comprise roughly 75% of all crypto trading today. The Hyperliquid integration makes leveraged perpetual futures available inside Base App.
The leveraged crypto perpetual futures feature on Base App is not available in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, or other jurisdictions that restrict leveraged crypto derivatives. Hyperliquid handles execution for these perpetual futures and trades occur inside the Base App, with execution processing performed by Hyperliquid while the user interface and trade flow remain within Base App. The launch was described as providing advanced trading tools without requiring users to give up self-custody, preserving control of users’ crypto assets even as they access leveraged perpetual futures through the integrated execution service.
The addition marks a significant development for advanced crypto trading by bringing the advanced trading tools users have been requesting into the Base App ecosystem. It also reflects documented user demand for leverage, with power users citing leverage as their single most requested feature, and extends the platform’s trading capabilities while preserving user self‑custody and integrated execution.
